Holy Saturday #2 -- March 30, 2013

Yesterday was busy at work but I was able to get out during the noon hour. The new office is not near Saint Patrick's, so I walked up Bush to Notre Dame des Victoires.  It was not as crowded as Saint Patrick's.  I stayed for the readings, then had to head back.  The weather was warm and sunny. 

My wife met me downtown about 4pm and we took a leisurely walk over to the ballpark.  It felt funny going to a game on Good Friday, but a family at Good Shepherd School had gotten a luxury box, actually two boxes, and sold tickets to raise money for the school.  Kids and parents were happy to see my wife.

The weather was nice when we got there, but it cooled off rapidly.  The Giants had lost the first game of the Bay Bridge Series against the Athletics.  Barry Zito pitched well and gave up one run.  He left with a lead and relievers held it and Sergio Romo closed.  I took the photo of Romo's teammates coming out to celebrate the victory.

This morning we went to Mazzeti's Bakery to pick up some Easter goodies. 

The Private Life of an Easter Masterpiece -- April 7, 2012

Doctor Peter Henri Van Der Weyde was born in Nymegen, Holland in 1813. He went on to live a remarkable life of achievement in the sciences and the arts. He died in America in 1895. He wrote the articles which gave this blog its name.

In Part 6 of his memoir, Reminiscences of an Active Life (http://cablecarguy.blogspot.com/2008/07/reminiscences-of-active-life-6-july-5.html), he says "The old master Roger Van der Weyden is one of the ancestors of the family."

On 03-April-2010, a BBC Two television series, The Private Life of a Masterpiece, featured Rogier van der Weyden's "The Descent From the Cross," which is currently in the collection of the Prado Museum in Madrid. In the television episode, "The Private Life of an Easter Masterpiece",  Professor Susie Nash calls the painting, which was copied and referenced ceaselessly throughout Europe, "the most important painting of the whole period of the entire 15th century." 

The emotions of the people feel real. 

Today we went to lunch at Camelot Fish and Chips, then across the highway to Mazzeti's Bakery to pick up cakes and hot cross buns for Easter.  

Boxing Day #1 -- December 26, 2011

We had a nice Christmas weekend.  Saturday morning we headed to Mazetti's Bakery in Pacifica to pick up a large order.  There was a long line, but the wait was worth it.  We went to 5pm mass at Good Shepherd.  There was a good crowd.

On Christmas morning, we got up and opened presents.  I got an O-gauge Lionel train to run under the tree.  We had to leave fairly early.  We had lunch with my in-laws and went to my mother's house for dinner.  All very nice.  I managed to have a slice of San Honoré cake for dessert at each meal. I should be ashamed of myself -- but I am not.

Today we went for a drive down the coast so my wife could practice with her new camera.  We bought some artichoke bread at Archangeli's in Pescadero and ate it for lunch.  We walked around and took some photos there and in Half Moon Bay.

When we got home, my daughter used her new cupcake maker.  Very good.  I set up my new train.  It was much easier to set up the O-gauge track and get the train on the rails.  HO was hard.  I took the photo of the train under the tree today.

Easter Vigil -- April 23, 2011

Today we went to Mazzetti's Bakery and picked up some Easter goodies. Relatives were visiting from out of town. It was raining when we went to Easter Vigil. I took this photo last year, when the weather was nicer, on our way to Easter Vigil. I handed out candles before mass. It was a nice ceremony tonight.

Yesterday we were sad to learn that Patricia Volan, Principal of Good Shepherd School for many years, is retiring at the end of the school year. She has done great things for the school.

TR Takes to the Air -- April 3, 2010

Former President Theodore Roosevelt takes his first ride on an airplane, on 11-October-1910. The pilot is Arch Hoxsey, a member of the Wright Brothers' exhibition team. Hoxsey died in a crash on 31-December-1910.

We went out to do some shopping this afternoon and saw huge waves pounding Rockaway Beach. We stopped at Mazzetti's Bakery to get Easter goodies.

Today is the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express.
