The Indian Chases the Bear -- But Not For Long -- November 19, 2022

San Francisco Examiner, 27-November-1922

This post was delayed because I not update it before a recent trip to the hospital.

100 years ago, the 28th Big Game was played at Stanford on Thanksgiving Day. The Stanford team was called the Indians and their mascot was an Indian. Cal brought a live bear to field to serve as their mascot. The Stanford Tree was far in the future. Cal won 28-0.

This year, Cal won the 125th Big Game, again winning 28-0.

Tournament of Roses -- December 30, 2013

A Santa Fe Railroad ad from the 30-December-1913 San Francisco Call and Post advertises the Tournament of Roses Parade, which has been held in Pasadena since 1890.  This year Stanford will play Michigan in what is being advertised as the 100th Rose Bowl Game.  The first game was held in 1902, and the next one in 1916.  It has been held every year since.  The football game replaced the Roman Chariot Race.

Stanford Theater -- November 7, 2013

The Stanford Theater on University Avenue in Palo Alto is one of the few surviving repertory movie theaters left in Northern California.  When I took the photo on 20-October-2013, it was showing Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Force of Evil.

Nickname #13 -- April 21, 2012

The Emporium, "The Big E," was a department store on Market Street in San Francisco.  The store opened in 1896 in the Parrott Building, which is not to be confused with the Parrott Block on Montgomery Street.  The facade, seen in the image above, was preserved when the store was demolished to make way for a Bloomingdale's.  I fondly remember the Roof Rides.

From the 19-September-1897 San Francisco Call.  Be sure to click on the image to see a larger view.

The weather was warm again today.  We went to the Stanford Shopping Center.  One garage was closed so they could hold a concert on the roof.  Something to do with the new MicroSoft store.  We had hotdogs for lunch.

Gung Hay Fat Choy #5 -- February 11, 2012

Gum Lung,  the Golden Dragon, sits in an empty storefront on Market near Kearny, patiently waiting for the parade to begin.  This is his year.  The reflections in the store windows make it a hard spot to take a photo.  I took this one on 03-February-2012.

This morning we went to Stanford Shopping Center.  We had lunch at Melt, a restaurant that serves only grilled cheese sandwiches and soup.  The food was good.

After 5 o'clock mass, we went to Kay Heung #2 and got some Chinese food. Then we went home and watched the Chinese New Year parade.

Pumpkin Picking #2 -- October 22, 2011

We went to Half Moon Bay today to get a pumpkin. Traffic on One was backed up to at least Princeton. We went to the 4-Cs patch again. I took the photo today. I like the color of pumpkins.  A little bit of the traffic is visible in the background. We found two great pumpkins for $12.00. The weather was nice and warm.

We went up 92. Traffic was backed up all the way to 280.

We drove down to the Stanford Shopping Center and had lunch at Gourmet Franks so we could sit outside.

Nickname #5 -- August 13, 2011

Reno has long called itself "The Biggest Little City in the World." Here is the famous sign on South Virginia Street. I took the photo during our visit last month.

Today we went to the Stanford Shopping Center and had lunch at Gourmet Frank. I had a chicken apple hot dog. Very good.

Door #7 - January 15, 2011

Another view of the entrance of the Pacific Telephone Building at 140 New Montgomery. Timothy Pflueger and his partner James Miller designed the building, which opened in 1925. Sadly, it is empty at present. Previous view:

Today was the first warm sunny day in months. We went to the Stanford Shopping Center and ate at the hotdog place. It was nice to sit outside and eat.

Family visited from out of town.

Hot Today -- June 12, 2010

It was very warm today. We took a drive down 280 to the Stanford Shopping Center. On the way, we discovered that our air conditioning was not working. It was in the 90s at Stanford. Back in Pacifica, it was only about 80F, but that was enough. After a bit of work, we went to 5 o'clock mass at Good Shepherd. A baby cried during communion. Father Greg said he has no trouble with crying babies. It's another form of worship.

After mass, I took the photo of Stella Pilgrim's statue of Jesus the Good Shepherd.

Happy Saint Valentine's Day -- February 14, 2009

We went to Stanford Shopping Center and had lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. It was cold but sunny. It started to rain on the way back. There were dramatic clouds when we went to mass.

I took the photo in Union Square on 15-February-2008. They are doing another exhibit of heart sculptures this year.

Stanford Shopping Center Disappointment -- March 29, 2008

We went to the Stanford Shopping Center today and made two sad discoveries: Books, Inc had closed and moved to somewhere on El Camino and the branch of the Oakville Grocery had closed. One of our favorite outings on a Saturday had been to buy lunch at the Oakville Grocery and sit out at the tables and watch the dogs go by. Then the family would shop for clothes and I would find a chair at Books, Inc and read. When they were done, I would sometimes buy a book.

I took the photo at Stanford Shopping Center on a happier day, 24-November-2007.

We went to mass at Good Shepherd. I like the readings from Acts during Easter season.

After mass, there was a ministry fair in the hall. It had rained yesterday and was cold this morning, but it was nice and clear and sunny after mass. Then we went to dinner at Guerrero's Tacqueria. Their sign has finally been repaired after the January storm.

Cantor Center/Vallemar Station -- October 27, 2007

My daughter wanted to visit the Cantor Center at Stanford to study a statue for a paper she is writing. I had never been to the Rodin garden. I enjoyed seeing the statues outdoors. I was overwhelmed by the Gates of Hell and we all had a nice discussion about what some of the figures represented.
Today I took this photograph of his signature on "Adam".
Later in the day, we took our in-laws to mass at Good Shepherd. We were eucharistic ministers tonight. Then we went to dinner at Vallemar Station, which we had not visited for a few years. It is the most recognizable surving station of the the Ocean Shore Railroad, which went out of business in 1921. We enjoyed the food.
The World Series game was less enjoyable. The Rockies are now down 3 games to 1. It was 35 degrees during the seventh inning stretch.
