Shellfish Warning -- January 30, 2024

I took this photo at the south parking lot at Rockaway Beach on 26-January-2024. I should have taken a closer shot of the shellfish warning sign. The county is finding high levels of biotoxins in mussels and clams.

Mister Softee at Rockaway Beach -- September 30, 2023

Wednesday was a beautiful day in Pacifica. I went to Rockaway Beach. The tide was high and there was a slight cool wind. I took a walk and as I was nearing the bridge over the creek, I heard Mister Softee's music. When I came around, I found him parked in the circle by Nick's. I had a vanilla cone with a chocolate dip. It started melting immediately. @softeenorcal

We had a nice picnic dinner at Rockaway Beach and watched the sun go down through the smoke.

Pacifica Sunset -- September 3, 2016

After 5 o'clock mass, we bought sandwiches and parked at Rockaway Beach.  There were many groups of pelicans and masses of seagulls.

Career Day/Fire/Robbery -- January 28, 2015

It has been an exciting few days.  Monday morning the radio went off and the announcers on KCBS said that there was a four alarm grass fire in Pacifica.  They didn't say where except that it was near the home of one of the announcers.  Later they said it was in the canyon behind Rockaway Beach and that Terra Nova Boulevard was closed.  I decided to work from home.  My wife had to drive out to the beach in Linda Mar to get to Highway One.  The condos and homes up the hill were evacuated, but no homes were damaged.

Tuesday morning the announcers on KCBS said thieves had driven an SVU through the front window of the Wells Fargo History Museum on Montgomery Street and made off with the gold nugget collection.  These jerks should remember:  Wells Fargo Never Forgets.

Later on Tuesday I went to Saint Anthony-Immaculate Conception School in San Francisco for Career Day.  They sent us around in pairs.  My partner used to be a nanny.  Her talk about all the opportunities it opened up was very interesting.  First we spoke to 5th and 6th grades, then 4th, then K and 1st.  I adjusted my talk about Wells Fargo and IT for each group.  I didn't mention three-tier architecture to K and 1.  The kids asked good questions.  In K and 1 they all said what they wanted to be.  They mostly wanted to be police officers.  Later I told the policeman that he had been a big hit.  Someone mentioned that the fire department was coming later.  He said that then they would all want to be firefighters.

Clement Street and Rain -- March 24, 2012

Today our daughter went to an event at Star of the Sea Church.  My wife and I wanted to walk around our old neighborhood.  It was raining lightly when we parked in the lot on Ninth Avenue.  We went to the Walgreens in the former Coliseum Theater and bought a nice golf umbrella.  We walked past Pinelli's Flowerland, where I bought her flowers every ten days after we got married.  I had to slow down after we bought a house.  We walked past the doughnut place where I used to buy us treats.  We went to Schubert's Bakery and bought pastries.  I had forgotten how small it is.  We wound up by Busvan's, which closed recently.  We bought the computer desk I am sitting at as I type this at Busvan's.

On the way back, we stopped at See's Candy and bought some items for Easter.  The clerk was talkative.  A man came in with two small children who were very excited.

We went to the Richmond Branch Library, where I had spent a lot of time when I was growing up.  We walked through the door and the desk was gone.  I was disappointed to see that there are not many books, upstairs or downstairs in the children's room.  The library is cleaner and brighter than it was before.  I found only a few books I had read still on the shelves.

It was raining harder when we left the library.  We went back to the car and went for a little drive.

After the event was done, we went to Bill's Place to have lunch, but it was jammed.  We drove back to Pacifica and ate at Rockin' Robs.

We went home and listened to the Giants on the radio.  Spring training is nearly over.

We went to five o'clock mass and it was still raining hard.

Benny Bufano #11 -- October 29, 2011

Hillsdale Mall developer David Bohannon commissioned sculptor Benny Bufano to provide sculptures to decorate the new mall in San Mateo. Bufano opened a studio on the mall site in 1955 and created ten of his famous animal sculptures. This sculpture, "Penguin Mother" shows a penguin with two babies. This was a popular theme with Bufano (http://cablecarguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/benny-bufano-5-february-23-2011.html).

Today we left the house and found that the left front tire on my car was flat.  We went to Pacifica Tire and got two Michelins installed in an hour.  We walked around Rockaway Beach while we waited and had pumpkin ice cream sundaes at Rockin' Rob's.

Good Shepherd Auction #2 -- April 25, 2010

Yesterday we attended the annual auction/dinner dance for Good Shepherd School. This year it was held at Nick's Restaurant, a Pacifica institution in Rockaway Beach. We donated a history walking tour for two families. There was a good turnout. I think they made some money.

I took the photo after we parked last night.

Before the festitivites, we went to mass at Good Shepherd church. When my wife got to work Friday, there were fire trucks parked around the church. It turned out that the baptismal font had flooded and covered the floor with water. Father Piers said that vandals had gotten into the pump room and opened the faucet to fill the font. There were fans and three big dehumidifiers set up to dry the floor. We hope they won't have to replace the hardwood. Why would someone do that to a church?
