Superman calls balls and strikes as Robin catches and Batman bats. I think Robin needs a better mask.

After debuting in Action Comics #1 in 1938, Superman shared his time with another book, under his own name. He went on to appear in many other books. I liked Batman better.

Jerry Siegel 100 -- October 18, 2014

Writer Jerry Siegel, who was born 100 years ago yesterday on 17-October-1914.  With his Cleveland friend artist Joe Shuster, Siegel created the character of Superman and sold it to the company that eventually became DC (Detective Comics).  Superman first appeared on 18-April-1939 on the cover of Action Comics Number One.  I have always liked the guy in the left foreground.

Comic Book #22 -- April 22, 2013

On 18-April-2013 we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the publication of Action Comics Number 1, which introduced Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's Superman to the world.  The popularity of Superman revolutionized the comic book business and led to the creation of hundreds of other costumed super heroes. I was always more of a fan of Batman, who was a self-made man.

Comic Book #20 -- January 20, 2013

Captain Marvel, the Big Red Cheese, made his debut in Whiz Comics #2, published by Fawcett.  Fawcett had earlier published the humor magazine Captain Billy's Whiz Bang.  The Captain was Billy Batson, a boy who worked for radio station WHIZ.  An ancient wizard gave him the ability to become adult Captain Marvel by saying the word "SHAZAM."  Captain Marvel, often drawn by CC Beck, was Superman's greatest competitor until National Periodicals (DC) won a lawsuit alleging that Captain Marvel infringed on Superman's copyright.  At the same time, most superhero titles were dead or declining.  DC revived Captain Marvel in the 1970s.

Here he tortures a Nazi.  Spy Smasher, another Fawcett hero, also appears on the cover.

Captain Marvel appeared in a 1941 Republic serial: http://cablecarguy.blogspot.com/2011/09/dvd-adventures-of-captain-marvel.html

Comic Book #6 -- June 21, 2011

The first issue of Action Comics, from June, 1938, featured the debut of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's Superman. The popularity of Superman revolutionized the comic book business and led to the creation of hundreds of other costumed super heroes. I was always more of a fan of Batman, who was a self-made man.

Today was the first day of summer. It was warm again.
