Twelfth 500-Mile Speedway Grind -- May 30, 2024

Indianapolis Times, 31-May-1924

100 years ago today, on 30-May-1924, LL Corum and Joe Boyer both won the twelfth Indianapolis 500 in a Duesenberg racing car. Owner Fred Duesenberg was not happy with the positions of his cars at about 250 miles and he had them both pull in and had Boyer take over Corum's car, with the instruction to win or destroy the car.

1934 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Town Car -- November 24, 2013

We visited the Blackhawk Museum in June to drool over their collection of classic autos.  This 1934 Duesenberg Model J has a town car body by Murphy of Pasadena.  The sign points out that while Murphy built hundreds of bodies for Model Js, that they only built four town car bodies for Model Js. 

 I like Duesenbergs.

1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Corsica Four Place Open Tourer -- October 22, 2013

We visited the Blackhawk Museum in June to drool over their collection of classic autos.  This 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Corsica Four Place Open Tourer.  Milanese engineer Ettore Bugatti, who built some of the most wonderful autos, carefully numbered his designs from his 1898 Type 1 through Type 73, designed during World War II.  

The "S" stood for surbaissé because of the lowered lines of the car. The "C" was for compresseur because the car was returned to the factory to have a supercharger installed. The body was designed by the Corsica Coach Works in London.  I like the black body with the red upholstery. 

If I can't ever have a Duesenberg, I would be happy to have a Bugatti. 

1929 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Convertible Coupe -- August 26, 2013

 

We visited the Blackhawk Museum in June to drool over their collection of classic autos.  The  boattail 1929 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Convertible Coupe is posed back-to-back with a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Boattail.  Walter M Murphy of Pasadena built the body.  I like Duesenbergs. 

1932 Duesenberg Model J Rollston Torpedo Berliner -- April 29, 2011

San Francisco's Academy of Art University has a fine collection of classic cars available for study by its design students. They shared the collection at the 2010 San Francisco International Auto Show. Here is one of my favorites, a 1932 Duesenberg Model J Rollston Torpedo Berliner. DSCN6421.
