Byte Magazine -- Christmas -- December 22, 2023

listal.com

Christmas is coming.

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine: The Small Systems Journal. On the cover of the December 1975 issue, parents appear to be terrified of a newly arrived microcomputer and angry at Santa for delivering it. The text on the monitor says "COMPUTERS: THE ULTIMATE TOYS." Early microcomputers tended to do everything in uppercase.

The Altair was probably the first commercially available microcomputer. The Motorolla 6800 was an 8-bit microprocessor.

Byte Magazine -- Floppy Disks -- April 24, 2023

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine: The Small Systems Journal. Robert Tinney's cover for the May, 1980 issue is the coolest depiction I have ever seen of a 5 1/4" floppy disk. Or is it a ten? They really were floppy.

Byte Magazine -- American Gothic -- March 21, 2023

listal.com

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine: The Small Systems Journal. Robert Tinney's cover for the March, 1977 issue was inspired by Grant Wood's 1930 painting American Gothic.

Byte Magazine -- Future Trends -- January 19, 2023

vintagefreeware.com

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine. I always enjoy looking at old predictions of "Future Trends." I see a stereo, a camera, a calculator, a tape recorder and a wristwatch, all of which have been mostly replaced by the cell phone. I may be mistaken, but I don't see any prediction of a cell phone or even a wireless phone.

Byte Magazine -- Windows 3.0 -- October 23, 2022

vintagefreeware.com

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine. Windows 3.0 was the first release that I read much about. 3.1 was the first one that I used. I got to play with OS/2, but it wasn't impressive.

Byte Magazine -- Hypertext -- September 24, 2022

vintagefreeware.com

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine. Here is an early cover talking about hypertext. This may have been where I first read about it in detail. I have said this elsewhere: I like the way hypertext works. My thought processes have always jumped all over the place.

Byte Magazine -- Guide to the IBM Personal Computers -- August 23, 2022

vintagefreeware.com

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine. Here is the cover of a special issue dedicated to IBM Personal Computers. The first IBM PC came with an 8088 processor, 64kb of RAM and two 5 1/4" floppy drives. I remember that the PC XT came with more memory and a hard drive. I don't think I ever used a PC Portable. The XT3270 and the IBM 3270 could act as stand-alone PCs or as 3270 terminal emulators. I used 3270 emulators for many years at Wells Fargo. I never used an S9000.

This issue was published before IBM introduced the OS/2 line, which never caught on.

IBM did the right thing when it chose an open architecture for the IBM PC, but clones eventually drove them out of the market. The first PC that I bought was an ATT 6300 that came with a faster 8086 processor.

Byte Magazine -- Software Piracy -- June 26, 2022

This is one of my favorite Byte Magazine covers. I had a tee shirt with this Robert Tinney image. The 5.5" floppy disk brings back memories.

Byte Magazine -- APL -- March 23, 2022

listal.com

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine: The Small Systems Journal. People might think that the cover of the August 1977 edition referred to Apple, the computer company, but Apple had just been founded. The cover referred to the cool programming language APL (A Programming Language).

Byte Christmas -- December 23, 2021

Byte Magazine, December, 1976

I used to subscribe to Byte Magazine. I wish I had a better quality image so I could read what was on the Christmas lists.
