Comic Book -- Baseball Thrills -- July 6, 2023

This 1951 edition of Baseball Thrills was allegedly edited by Cleveland Indians pitching star Bob Feller. One story talks about Bobby Thomson's "shot heard round the world," which sank the Dodgers in a special playoff with the Giants. The other talks about Joe DiMaggio's retirement.

Ralph Branca, RIP -- November 23, 2016

On 03-October-1951, at the Polo Grounds in New York City, Bobby Thomson of the Giants hit the Shot Heard 'Round the World to beat the Dodgers and complete the Miracle at Coogan's Bluff.  Ralph Branca, who delivered the pitch, has died.  “A guy commits murder and he gets pardoned after 20 years. I didn’t get pardoned.”

Book: Few and Chosen: Defining Giants Greatness Across the Eras -- December 12, 2013

We were visiting Half Moon Bay last month and chanced to stop at Bay Books, a wonderful store.  The owner saw my Giants cap and led me over to the sports shelf.  He mentioned that his uncle had been an executive with the San Francisco Seals.

He strongly recommended the book Few and Chosen: Defining Giants Greatness Across the Eras by Giants great Bobby Thomson and Phil Pepe.  I took his advice and bought it.  I enjoyed it greatly.

As Bill James has pointed out, many old ball players like to say the game has gone downhill since they played.  Bobby Thomson was not that way.  He includes players up to the era of Matt Williams, Jeff Kent and Barry Bonds.

Thomson told many stories about the men he played with, and the men he met during later years.

BART Giants Halloween -- October 28, 2010

The agents at the Montgomery Street BART Station decorated for the World Series and Halloween. Fortunately the Giants and the holiday share the same colors. I took the photo today.

At lunchtime it felt as if it was going to rain soon.

Lady Antebellum did a nice National Anthem. Bobby Thomson's daughters threw out the first pitch.

The Giants beat the Rangers 9-0 in the second game of the World Series. Matt Cain did a great job. I'm in a good mood.

Bobby Thomson, the Flying Scot, the man who hit the Shot Heard 'Round the World to beat the Dodgers and complete the Miracle at Coogan's Bluff, has died. Thank you, Bobby.
