Firehouse #70 -- August 5, 2013

San Francisco native Ruth Asawa has placed many of her sculptures around the city.  One of the favorites with many people is the fountain in the plaza of the Hyatt Union Square Hotel.  The fountain, installed in 1973, was formed using baker's clay, with help from friends and school kids who created some of the people, animals and autos.  It was then cast in bronze.  Unfortunately, the fountain has been threatened by Apple, which wants to replace the building at Post and Stockton with an ugly Apple Store which would displace the fountain.

This section of the fountain depicts Engine 12 on Stanyan Street.  I imagine her helpers created the fire truck and the dog.  

Steve Jobs, RIP -- October 5, 2011

I got started with personal computers in the generation after the Apple I, but I have always liked the look of it. Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs changed America.  I tried the Apple II, but I had already gotten used to the IBM PC.  I liked MS-DOS and especially MS-BASIC better than Apple's.  We later purchased an early Mac, which I felt was limiting.  I like developing things.  My wife and daughter love their iPods.

There was a huge crowd outside the Yerba Buena Gardens theater, waiting for the big Apple announcement. Steve Jobs came down from the mountain with the tablet. No camera. Limited RAM. At least it doesn't cost as much as rumored.

The Republican leadership admonished their people to behave during the State of the Union speech tonight. Good for them.

Signs of the Times #25 -- January 6, 2009

Rumors are flying around that this will be the last MacWorld. Apple said this was the last year they would participate. Steve Jobs wasn't there. Rumors also flew around that he was dead. I didn't see a big line of people of people waiting to get in this morning for the keynote, but they may have let people in early because of the cold.

I took the photo today on Howard near Third.

Today is the Feast of the Epiphany, so I wore one of my Christmas ties for the last time this season. Tomorrow we start to take down the tree.
