Door #9 -- March 14, 2011

Too late for last month's For the Love of Film (Noir) blogathon (http://cablecarguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/roots-of-film-noir-february-15-2011.html), here is the doorway of the Hunter-Dulin Building. According to researchers like Don Herron of the famous Hammett Walking Tour (http://www.donherron.com/tour.html), Sam Spade and Lew Archer's office was in the Hunter-Dulin Building. Brigid O'Shaugnessy would have walked through this doorway. The building was also the home of NBC's West Coast Orange Network.

I took the photo early in the morning on 18-February-2011.

Alley #17 -- March 13, 2011

Chelsea Place is up Bush Street from Burritt Street, where Sam Spade's partner was killed. I like the bricks on the building on the right.

It rained today. We took a quick trip to Half Moon Bay to buy some presents at Bay Books.

Pulp #21 -- February 19, 2011

Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon was first published in three issues of The Black Mask in 1929.

We had heavy yesterday and today. I had to work very late. Today we went to the Blood Bank.
After 5 o'clock mass, we went to Kay Heung #2 and got some Chinese food. Then we went home and watched the Chinese New Year parade. It was cold, but it wasn't raining.

Alley #16 -- February 16, 2011

Dashiell Hammett lived at 20 Monroe Street, the brick-faced building, in 1926. The street is now named after him. Across Pine Street is Burritt Street, where Sam Spade's partner Miles Archer would be killed early in The Maltese Falcon.

There was heavy hail this morning about 8:45. Then sunlight. Then violent rain around 12:30.

Alley #15 -- January 11, 2011

Down Burritt Street, on the left-hand side, Sam Spade's partner Miles Archer met his doom. I remember Herb Caen writing that the white-on-blue street sign still hung on the wall, just as it had in The Maltese Falcon. Almost immediately, someone stole the street sign. Now there is a standard black-on-white sign and a plaque that gives away the identity of the murderer. I took the photo on 03-January-2011.

Today it was very cold and it rained at lunch time.
