Feast 0f Saint Francis #4 -- October 4, 2013

Today is the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi.  I'm sorry I don't know the source of this image of Saint Francis preaching to the animals.  I thought about him when our cat died this year.

Habemus Papam -- March 13, 2013

The conclave that formed to select a new Pope after Benedict XVI resigned the Papacy has chosen Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires. He has taken the name Francis I. There is some discussion about whether he is referring to Francis of Assisi, Francis Xavier, or another Francis. Pope Francis has many unique aspects, he is the first Pope from the Western Hemisphere, the first Jesuit, the first Francis. His parents were Italian immigrants. I hope my cousins in Argentina are pleased.  He is known for living simply.

I'm happy he chose Francis, especially if he was thinking about Francis of Assisi. I was sort of hoping for Sixtus VI, but I didn't think it was likely.

 I took this photo of the National Shrine of Saint Francis, formerly Saint Francis Church, on 20-August-2011. Saint Francis Church was San Francisco's first parish.

Feast of Saint Francis #3 -- October 4, 2012

Today is the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi.

“Lord make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
And where there is sadness, joy.

"O divine master grant that I may
Not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive-
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.
And its in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.”

Saint Francis Church in North Beach is now the National Shrine of Saint Francis. The former gym/church hall contains the Nuova Porziuncola, a model of the little church rebuilt by Saint Francis.I took the photo on 20-August-2011.

Also today Salvatore Cordileone will be installed as the ninth Archbishop of San Francisco.

Benny Bufano #10 -- August 28, 2011

Hillsdale Mall developer David Bohannon commissioned sculptor Benny Bufano to provide sculptures to decorate the new mall in San Mateo. Bufano opened a studio on the mall site in 1955 and created ten of his famous animal sculptures. This sculpture, "Saint Francis on Horseback," also includes Saint Francis of Assisi, one of Bufano's favorite subjects. Francis is rarely depicted on horseback. It doesn't seem very humble.

Nuova Porziuncola -- August 20, 2011

Today we parked at Fifth and Mission and caught a 30 Stockton to Green. We went to Saint Francis Church, which is now the National Shrine of Saint Francis. The family had not been there since the church was restored. Then we visited the Nuova Porziuncola, the model of the little church rebuilt by Saint Francis. It is beautiful to see. The walls are rough stone with some damaged frescoes, copied from the originals.

The photo shows the old gym, which contains the Nuova Porziuncola.

From there we went to the Cafe Sport, which my wife and I had not visited for almost 30 years. We had pasta with pesto and fried calamari. All good. The restaurant was not very busy.

Then we went to Molinari's and bought some olive oil and some other items. It doesn't smell the way that Gloria Delicatessen used to smell. Then we went to Victoria Pastry and bought some cookies.

We walked out Columbus to Kearny and Kearny to Post. We went over to Union Square and visited Macys, then went home.

Father Jess said 5 0'clock mass.
