The Black Cat Magazine was launched in Boston in 1895. It published short stories and was known for printing stories by new writers. The cover is decorated for Saint Valentine's Day. Note the ad at the bottom for Clipper Bevel Gears for bicyclists. This tells you the magazine aimed for a young audience.

Happy Mardi Gras, everyone. One hundred years ago, the Illinois Central Railroad invited people in Paducah, Kentucky to visit New Orleans for the Mardi Gras season.

"The Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a pageant of unrivaled beauty and splendor, the result of carefully organized artistic effort that begins many months before the event. There are several days of magnificent parades, brilliant balls and a final day when masked throngs frolic in the streets and give the carnival its cosmopolitan and democratic character."

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and Saint Valentine's Day, so we are celebrating Valentine's Day today.

Jack Benny 125 -- February 14, 2019

Happy Saint Valentine's Day, everyone.

I did not remember that Jack Benny, star of stage, screen, and radio, was born on Valentine's Day in 1894.  Today he would have been 125 years old.

Benny left his footprints in the forecourt of Grauman's Chinese on 13-January-1941. "My heart belongs to Mary (his wife, Mary Livingstone) but my feet belong to Grauman." I love his radio show.

His best movie was To Be or Not To Be with Carole Lombard, but he made many others.  This was the only Jack Benny movie directed by Ernst Lubitsch.

I took the photo on 17-March-2009 in the Yerba Buena Gardens. The heart is part of the Hearts in San Francisco program. This one is "Painted Ladies We Love" by Alan Roth and Nick Berg. It shows the famous row of Victorians across from Alamo Square on Steiner Street.

We went to Stanford Shopping Center and had lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. It was cold but sunny. It started to rain on the way back. There were dramatic clouds when we went to mass.



I took the photo in Union Square on 15-February-2008. They are doing another exhibit of heart sculptures this year.
