Macy's Union Square to Close -- February 29, 2024

Macy's announced that its Union Square store is going to close in about one year. This has caused a furor in San Francisco. Many are blaming Mayor London Breed, even though Macy's announced at the same time that it is closing 149 other stores. This will be tough on neighborhood businesses.

My mother always shopped at the Emporium, but my wife spent many happy hours at Macy's.

Paris and Union Square -- November 15, 2015

Friday was a tough day.  Terrorists simultaneously attacked several locations in Paris, killing more than 100 people.  I was impressed to see Parisians using the #PorteOuverte hashtag to offer shelter to people who were stuck out in the streets.  I was especially impressed by the Sikh community, who opened their temples to people who needed a place to go.

Around 3pm, a double-deck tour bus on Post near Mason ran away, hitting a bicycle and dragging the rider two blocks towards Stockton.  It hit several more cars until it ran into the construction site for the new Apple Store at Stockton.  Here is a photo I took on Thursday.  I didn't catch the union members picketing.  I hope they are ok.  I was amazed to hear that no one was killed.

Fire and Earthquake Anniversary #6 -- April 18, 2013

Today is the 107th anniversary of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire.

Someone spotted a suspicious package at Third and Market.  Considering the recent bombing at the Boston Marathon, authorities decided to move the ceremony to Union Square.

Today for the first time there were no survivors at the ceremony.

Day Off -- December 19, 2011

I took the day off so we went downtown.  We parked at Fifth and Mission and walked up to Macy's.  We looked at the cats and dogs in the windows, then went upstairs so the family could do some shopping.  We stopped at Neiman Marcus to look at the tree and the City of Paris rotunda.  We went on down Geary to the Palace and looked at the decorations in the Garden Court and a collection of gingerbread houses designed by media people.  We went to Bucca de Beppo on Howard and had a nice lunch.

I took the photo of the tree in Union Square on 19-November-2011.

Hippo in Union Square -- November 29, 2010

Watching the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade the other day has inspired me to dig out a photo I took on 14-October-2006 when a travelling exhibit about the parade visited Union Square for the (roughly) 80th anniversary of the parade. I liked the pink Hippo.

It was very cold today.

Signs of the Times #28 -- June 11, 2009

I walked up to Union Square on 01-June-2009 and was sad to see that the See's Candy store had closed.

Yesterday I had to work from home to get Comcast to fix the problems we're having with phone and internet. They replaced the cable and the modem and so far things are working better.

Today when I went to the bus stop to go home, I found that the doors of Saint Patrick's were closed and the sidewalk blocked and the bus shelter was gone.
