When I was a kid, Gene Nelson on KSFO played old radio shows at night. He often played episodes of The Shadow. At some point, I found a copy of Jim Harmon's The Great Radio Heroes in the library and read that the Shadow was a very different character in the pulp magazines. That character sounded more interesting. The whole "clouds men's minds" didn't make a lot of sense, but wearing dark clothes and hiding in the shadows sounded cool. Later still, I got to read reprints and found that they were pretty cool.

This cover seemed appropriate for the year of the dragon.

Halloween is coming. The Shadow appeared in radio, pulp magazines, movies and comic books. The March 1944 issue of the Shadow comic book has skeletons, a bloody dagger and a green-faced evildoer.

Shadow Comics -- May 11, 2017

The August, 1944 issue of Shadow Comics features "The Shadow Brings Terror to Tokio."  It took a while to standardize American spellings of Japanese names.  

Comic Book #22 -- March 20, 2013

The March, 1945 issue of Shadow Comics boasts that it includes "The Three Giants of the Comics: The Shadow, Nick Carter, Doc Savage."  All three characters came from Street and Smith's pulp magazines.

The April, 1948 issue of Shadow Comics features a wonderfully rendered black cat.

The cover of the Summer, 1949 Shadow features an image with a white cat (nice contrast to the black-clad Shadow) and what appears to be the eyes of a black cat in a crystal ball.
