Cease Fire -- January 26, 2025

afsc.org

I haven't mentioned it because my hopes were not high that it would stick, but Israel and Hamas are engaged in a ceasefire. Hamas should release a few hostages or corpses each weak and Israel is releasing many Palestinian prisoners. T***p is trying to take credit, but President Biden and his team did all the work.

Carter's Funeral -- January 9, 2025

cnn.com

There was a funeral held at Washington National Cathedral for President Jimmy Carter. I was able to watch most of it before I left for work. All of the living ex-presidents and vice presidents were there. President Ford's son read a eulogy that his father wrote. Ford had asked Carter to deliver a eulogy at his funeral. Carter said he would do it if Ford would do the same thing. Walter Mondale's son read a eulogy left by his dad. Reverend Andrew Young gave the homily. Joe Biden spoke from his heart.

T***p had a nice nap. Vice President Pence's wife would not shake his hand.

Harris/Walz 2024 -- August 9, 2024

moveon.org

Vice President Kamala Harris has chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. I like them both. He came up with idea of calling Trump and Vance and their ideas "weird" and "creepy."

COVID-19, Vaccine, Masks, Church, Baseball and School -- July 31, 2024

cdc.gov

COVID-19 statistics have been going up.

We had an insane month, with an awful debate between President Joe Biden and convicted felon Donald Trump, the Republican National Convention, President Biden withdrew in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris.

We seem to have a stalemate in Ukraine.

The Paris Olympics started with an entertaining opening ceremony.

Joe Biden Steps Aside -- July 21, 2024

sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com

I woke up this morning and learned that President Joe Biden is withdrawing as a candidate for reelection. This is sad. It will be interesting to see who goes forward as the new candidate. I would vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Juneteenth, 2024 -- June 19, 2024

holidayscalendar.com

Happy Juneteenth, everyone.

After Vicksburg fell in 1863, Texas was mostly cut off from the rest of the Confederacy. Slaves in Texas did not learn about President Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation until 19-June-1865, when Union General Gordon Granger presented it to them. I don't think I learned about Juneteenth until I was in college.

On June 17, 2021 President Joe Biden signed a law making Juneteenth a national holiday.

Comic Book -- Spy Smasher -- September 7, 2022

coverbrowser.com

I like Spy Smasher. He didn't have fancy powers. He just smashed spies. He had a cool uniform, too. Here we see one of my favorite cover subjects, Axis leaders getting their comeuppance.

When I was young, everyone was antifa. When did it become acceptable for some people to be pro-Fascist? Some people went crazy because President Biden said that the Republican party was becoming semi-fascist. They have been calling Democrats socialists and communists for years.

Lynching is Spreading -- April 14, 2022

Omaha Monitor, 28-April-1922

Representative Leonidas C Dyer, a Republican from Missouri, introduced a bill to control lynching and got it passed by the House on more than one occasion, but each time it was denied by the Southern Senators. Just this year, the House and Senate passed the Emmett Till Antilynching Act. President Joe Biden signed it into law on 29-March-2022.

Omaha Monitor, 28-April-1922

The Omaha Monitor was an African-American owned newspaper.

WHAT EDITORS SAY
LYNCHING IS SPREADING

The spread of the lynching evils especially where the colored peoples are the victims is especially illustrated by events within the past few days. Quite recently the dispatches told of the lynching of two Negroes in a southern state for the crime of assault. The headline reader would be misled into thinking that this was a crime against women. On the contrary a reading of the text of the story revealed the fact that the offense was an assault and battery committed against a white man.

Originally the lynching of Negroes was condoned on the ground that it was a protection for the women. This was not always true even in the beginning of this monstrous wrong. Often innocent Negroes were framed by scheming enemies, and charged with social crimes. Regardless of the fact that any colored woman was regarded as fair prey for any white man, the orgy of lynching was directed exclusively against the colored man. But like any other wrong, it grew with age and practice.

The rope and stake were next applied to alleged murderers, when the accused was a colored man, and now it seems that where a Negro licks a white man in the south, the Negro’s life is forfeit.

No wonder the colored man is moving heaven and earth to secure the passage of the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill. And it would seem that the white people should also be interested, for it is a short step from lynching colored people to applying the same treatment to white people. In fact, that step has already been taken, and lynching of whites are also becoming of frequent occurrence.

The remedy lies in making the laws worthy of respect, and then rigidly enforcing them. This is supposed to be a government of law. It must be made so in fact, if this nation is to endure.

Afghan War Over -- August 30, 2021

In the Afghan War, American troops were on the ground longer than they were in the Revolutionary War or Vietnam. President Joe Biden, who had promised to bring all the American soldiers home by September 11, has pulled out the last of our soldiers.

We managed to evacuate almost all Americans and many of the people who helped us.

The US-backed government disintegrated almost instantly.

I don't remember where I found the photo of Yoko Ono and John Lennon.

People who remained silent when our former so-called president cut and ran from Syria, leaving our allies to the mercy of the government, are attacking President Biden, even though he implemented the deal that our former so-called president had made with the Taliban.

13 service people died in a suicide bombing, and some people went crazy. President Biden showed his respect when they returned to the US.

How Many More Lives, American Lives, Is It Worth -- August 17, 2021

The Afghan military has disintegrated, the Afghan government has fled and the Taliban have occupied Kabul. The Republicans blame everything on Joe Biden. They ignore recent history. President Joe Biden gave a strong speech on the subject. A few excerpts:

I stand squarely behind my decision.

American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves. We spent over a trillion dollars. We trained and equipped an Afghan military force of some 300,000 strong. Incredibly well equipped. A force larger in size than the militaries of many of our NATO allies. We gave them every tool they could need. We paid their salaries, provided for the maintenance of their air force, something the Taliban doesn’t have. Taliban does not have an air force. We provided close air support. We gave them every chance to determine their own future. What we could not provide them was the will to fight for that future.

There are some very brave and capable Afghan special forces units and soldiers. But if Afghanistan is unable to mount any real resistance to the Taliban now, there is no chance that one year — one more year, five more years or 20 more years — that U.S. military boots on the ground would have made any difference.

Here’s what I believe to my core: It is wrong to order American troops to step up when Afghanistan’s own armed forces would not. The political leaders of Afghanistan were unable to come together for the good of their people, unable to negotiate for the future of their country when the chips were down. They would never have done so while U.S. troops remained in Afghanistan bearing the brunt of the fighting for them. And our true strategic competitors, China and Russia, would love nothing more than the United States to continue to funnel billions of dollars in resources and attention into stabilizing Afghanistan indefinitely.

So I’m left again to ask of those who argue that we should stay: How many more generations of America’s daughters and sons would you have me send to fight Afghanistan’s civil war when Afghan troops will not? How many more lives, American lives, is it worth, how many endless rows of headstones at Arlington National Cemetery? I’m clear on my answer: I will not repeat the mistakes we’ve made in the past. The mistake of staying and fighting indefinitely in a conflict that is not in the national interest of the United States, of doubling down on a civil war in a foreign country, of attempting to remake a country through the endless military deployments of U.S. forces. Those are the mistakes we cannot continue to repeat because we have significant vital interest in the world that we cannot afford to ignore.

I’m now the fourth American president to preside over war in Afghanistan. Two Democrats and two Republicans. I will not pass this responsibility on to a fifth president. I will not mislead the American people by claiming that just a little more time in Afghanistan will make all the difference. Nor will I shrink from my share of responsibility for where we are today and how we must move forward from here. I am president of the United States of America, and the buck stops with me.

Afghan War Over? -- Twenty Years -- July 6, 2021

In the Afghan War, American troops were on the ground longer than they were in the Revolutionary War or Vietnam. President Joe Biden, who had promised to bring all the American soldiers home by September 11, has pulled out most of the soldiers. Others should be out by the end of August. A training cadre will remain.

The US-backed government will probably fall to the Taliban. Our withdrawal speeds the process.

I don't remember where I found the photo of Yoko Ono and John Lennon.

H.R.1319 - American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 -- March 12, 2021

Congress has passed (without a single Republican vote) and President Joe Biden has signed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. It will provide direct stimulus to people, tax breaks to ordinary people and other actions to stimulate the economy. It will help to fund COVID-19 vaccinations.

Many people say we are  making a return to the ideas of the New Deal and turning from the damage that has been done since 1981.

Many Republican members of Congress are trying to take credit for it.

A Real President -- January 20, 2021

sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com

At last we have a real president. We also have our first female, African American and South Asian vice president. Our former so-called president skipped the ceremony and skedaddled for Florida.

I said a prayer for both of them and for the United States.

When I was young, I often wondered why we had never had a president named Joe.

They Won/We Won -- November 7, 2020

moveon.org

It took a lot of counting, made slower by the great flood of absentee ballots, but the networks have finally called the election for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. He has always seemed to be a good guy and she will be the first female vice president and the first of African or Asian descent. Great crowds of people are celebrating in the streets of many cities.
