John Madden, RIP -- December 28, 2021

John Madden has died. I used to watch Raiders' games with my father when Madden was their coach. I remember that he seemed to retire early, but he went on to have a long career in broadcasting. I used to hear him call in once a week to Gene Nelson on KSFO and later to KCBS. While he was broadcasting, he travelled in a custom bus because he didn't like to fly. He did a lot for charity.

I don't usually write about football in this blog, but the National Football League celebrates its 100th birthday today, 17-September-2020.  The new league called itself the American Professional Football Association. Native American Jim Thorpe, winner of the Decathlon at the 1912 Olympic Games and coach of the Canton Bulldogs, one of the ten teams, was elected president. Note that the newspaper misspelled his family name in the headline. 

I couldn't find a reference to it in newspapers of the 17th and 18th, but I found this in the 19-September-1920 Richmond Times-Dispatch.

CANTON, OHIO, Sept. 18 -- James Thorpe, famous Indian football player and coach of the Canton Bulldogs, a local professional team, has been chosen head of the American Professional Football Association, the only professional football organization In the country.

Professional Football Association Representatives of eleven cities unanimously voted Thorpe to the presidency with Stanley Cofall, of Cleveland, as vice-president. and Art Tanney, of Akron, for secretary and treasurer.

At the meeting held here last night, Rock Island, Ill.; Rochester, N. Y.; Muncie, lnd.; Decatur, Ill.; Chicago, Cleveland, Dayton, Hammond, lnd.; and Akron teams were represented. A decision was reached to refrain from luring players out of college football for the professional football games.

Super Bowl Alert -- January 28, 2016

Things have been messy down at the end of Market.  The street is closed at Beale.  Beale is now a two-way street with several buses going north, including the 38-Geary and the F-Market bustitution. 

Now there are two 50s on the Ferry Building. 

In fact there are 50s up and down Market Street and all over the place. 

The F line street cars run only along the Embarcadero, cut off from Market Street by the Super Bowl Village. 

F buses, articulated and single, run from Castro to Don Chee Way, by the museum. 

Its not a train, its a streetcar.  This sign is on the shelter on Don Chee Way.

NFL Kickoff 2015 -- September 12, 2015

I rarely mention football in this blog, but Thursday I took a lunchtime walk towards the Ferry Building and found people setting up for NFL Kickoff 2015, which has something to do with the Super Bowl which will be held in Santa Clara.  The area in front of the fountain had a big stage where there was going to be music. 

I find it interesting that this is the 50th Super Bowl, but they are not going to identify it with a Roman numeral "L."  Instead, they are using Arabic numerals, as we see on the Ferry Building tower.  Using "L" would have improved kids' knowledge of  Roman numerals. 

Candlestick Park -- December 23, 2013

The San Franisco 49ers played the last regular season game at Candlestick Park.  They beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-24.  The last 49ers game I attended was played at Kezar Stadium before the 49ers moved to Candlestick in 1971.  I went to many Giants games at Candlestick and have fond memories of watching Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds, Jack Clark, Will Clark, Bobby Thompson, Barry Bonds and many others. 

My wife and I often talk about a 14-inning game against the Astros.  We gave up in the 13th when we couldn't feel our feet anymore.  The Giants won in 14.  I got rid of my thermal longjohns a few years after the Giants moved to their current ballpark. 

I used to go to day games while I was in college.  I sat in a certain section so I could run up the aisle and get right on a 28-Ballpark Express home. 

I remember the three flags in the outfield blowing in three different directions. 

I don't think I'll feel bad when the park gets torn down. 

Super Bowl XLVII -- February 2013

I hardly ever mention football in this blog, but it seemed appropriate because the 49ers are playing the Baltimore Ravens today in the Super Bowl in New Orleans.  There has been a bunch of vendors on Market Street every day selling 49ers stuff. 

The image is from the 29-November-1901 San Francisco Call.  It shows the Olympic Club playing the Reliance Club on a muddy field at 16th and Folsom.

Update 8pm:  The 49ers started out flat and Baltimore was way ahead.  After a 30-minute power outage early in the second half, the 49ers woke up and very nearly came back to win.  But they didn't.  Still, it was a heck of a game.

I took this photo in Tabor Alley near Third Street on 11-January-2012.

It rained a lot this morning.

Many are sad because the 49ers lost to the New York Giants in the Nation Conference championship game.  I think this is the second time I have mentioned football in this blog.
