Train Station #43 -- February 5, 2012

The Reno Amtrak station was built next to the 1926 Southern Pacific station as part of the ReTRAC project, which put the tracks underground through downtown Reno.

Train Station #42 -- January 6, 2012

The Southern Pacific built this depot in 1926. The Virginia and Truckee shared the depot until 1950. In the late 1970s, my family took the California Zephyr from Oakland 16th Street to Reno. We arrived at this station. A few years ago, the ReTRAC project eliminated grade crossings by putting the tracks into a trench. At the same time, the station was expanded. The new Amtrak addition has many relics that archaeologists dug up during the project.

I took the photo in July, 2011, but the sign over the door advertises National Train Day in May.

Reno has long called itself "The Biggest Little City in the World." Here is the famous sign on South Virginia Street. I took the photo during our visit last month.

Today we went to the Stanford Shopping Center and had lunch at Gourmet Frank. I had a chicken apple hot dog. Very good.

Alley #22 - August 11, 2011

Douglas Alley, shown here from South Virginia Street, was the site of many of Reno's earliest clubs when Nevada legalized gambling in 1931. I took the photo during our visit in July.

Reno -- July 28, 2011

After Disneyland (http://cablecarguy.blogspot.com/2011/07/mickey-mouse-pancakes-july-27-2011.html), we made an epic 12-hour drive (including stops) to Reno. I think we covered parts of I-5 that I had never before seen. We had a nice view from the 15th floor of Harrah's.
