Easter Rising 100 Years -- March 28, 2016

100 years ago, on Easter Monday, 1916, the Irish Volunteers and members of the Irish Citizen Army and the Cumann na mBan rose up against the British occupation in Dublin and declared the Irish Republic.  The British stopped them and executed their leaders.  This heavy-handed response led to increased support for Irish independence.

News of the Week April 24, 1915 -- April 24, 2015

The 24-April -1915 Motography featured "News of the Week as Shown in Films," with items from current newsreels.

"The fruit liner Heredia after her collision near New Orleans.  Copyright 1915 by Pathe News."  On 30-March-1915, the United Fruit Company liner Heredia rammed liner Parisian near the mouth of the Mississippi, then swerved off and sank steamer Weems. 

"Vice-president Marshall speaking at University of California.  Copyright 1915 by Universal Animated Weekly."  Thomas R Marshall of Indiana was Woodrow Wilson's Vice President.  Here he spoke at Cal Berkeley. 

"U. S. divers leave Washington for Honolulu to raise submarine.  Copyright 1915 by Universal Animated Weekly."  USS F-4 sank on 25-March-1915 off of Honolulu.  All hands were lost. 

"General Von Morger and his stall leaving their headquarters near Bolimov, Russian Poland.  Copyright 1915 Hearst-Selig News Pictorial."  I can't find anything about Von Morger.

"Easter parade on boardwalk at Atlantic City, N. J. Copyright 1915 Hearst-Selig News Pictorial."  Easter fell on 04-April-1915. 

"Wm. Hale Thompson, Chicago's new mayor, with Mrs. Thompson.  Copyright 1915 by Pathe News."  Big Bill Thompson (no relation, thank Heaven) was the last Republican mayor of Chicago.  He served from 1915 to 1923, then 1927-1931.  He was known for being profoundly corrupt.

Churches Unite in Solemn Anthems At Great Festival of Easter -- April 20, 2014

Happy Easter, everyone.  This list of Easter Services is from the 07-April-1912 San Francisco Call.  Most of the Roman Catholic parishes are still active, except for Holy Cross and Saint Rose.  Notice Christian Yoga and Grace Pro Cathedral. 
Last night we went to Easter Vigil at Good Shepherd church.  I always like the darkness and the candles.

Churches Unite in Solemn Anthems At Great Festival of Easter

The festival of Easter, at one time merely a commemoration of an event then fresh in the minds of all who took part but now surrounded with other observances giving it a varied significance, will be celebrated at nearly all of the churches of San Francisco today with special musical services.  Ecclesiastical musical history of all periods, from Gregorian chants to the most recent compositions of Dudey Buck, will be represented, either in the original form or in a present day adaptation in the vernacular, all for the one purpose, however, of recalling to mind the event of 1,912 years ago. 

Happy Easter #6 -- March 31, 2013

Happy Easter, everyone. Here is a bunny for Easter. Disney lost control of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in 1928 and didn't get him back until 2006. The image is from the 07-March-1928 Film Daily.

Last night we went to Easter Vigil at Good Shepherd.  It was very dark when they turned off the lights.   Two adults got baptized and received first communion.  Three also got confirmed.  I organized the collection. 

Happy Easter #5 -- April 8, 2012

Happy Easter, everyone. Here is a Bunny for Easter. John Bunny was a popular performer in early Vitagraph comedies like "A Cure for Pokeritis" (1912), "Hearts and Diamonds" (1914) and "The Pickwick Papers" (1913). He was born to play Mr Pickwick. Last night we went to Easter Vigil at Good Shepherd.  It was a nice service and my daughter was happy because they did not use incense. 

The Private Life of an Easter Masterpiece -- April 7, 2012

Doctor Peter Henri Van Der Weyde was born in Nymegen, Holland in 1813. He went on to live a remarkable life of achievement in the sciences and the arts. He died in America in 1895. He wrote the articles which gave this blog its name.

In Part 6 of his memoir, Reminiscences of an Active Life (http://cablecarguy.blogspot.com/2008/07/reminiscences-of-active-life-6-july-5.html), he says "The old master Roger Van der Weyden is one of the ancestors of the family."

On 03-April-2010, a BBC Two television series, The Private Life of a Masterpiece, featured Rogier van der Weyden's "The Descent From the Cross," which is currently in the collection of the Prado Museum in Madrid. In the television episode, "The Private Life of an Easter Masterpiece",  Professor Susie Nash calls the painting, which was copied and referenced ceaselessly throughout Europe, "the most important painting of the whole period of the entire 15th century." 

The emotions of the people feel real. 

Today we went to lunch at Camelot Fish and Chips, then across the highway to Mazzeti's Bakery to pick up cakes and hot cross buns for Easter.

Easter Vigil -- April 23, 2011

Today we went to Mazzetti's Bakery and picked up some Easter goodies. Relatives were visiting from out of town. It was raining when we went to Easter Vigil. I took this photo last year, when the weather was nicer, on our way to Easter Vigil. I handed out candles before mass. It was a nice ceremony tonight.

Yesterday we were sad to learn that Patricia Volan, Principal of Good Shepherd School for many years, is retiring at the end of the school year. She has done great things for the school.
