Buster Posey Day -- May 12, 2022

On Saturday the Giants honored catcher Buster Posey, who retired after last season. Many of his former teammates spoke, including Benjie Molina. Benjie's younger brother Yadier, who plays for the Cardinals, looked proud of his brother and happy to see a fellow catcher get honored. 

Farewell, Buster Posey -- November 4, 2021

Today catcher Buster Posey announced that he retiring from the Giants. I'm glad he is going out on top, while he can still walk. We are going to miss him. 

I took the photo on 19-November-2010, while the Giants were in the playoffs. I found Powell Street car 28 bedecked with exhortations for the Giants. This window said "Let's Go Buster." Posey was a rookie that year. 

Today is also the first day of Diwali. Happy Diwali to all my friends. 

2017 World Baseball Classic -- March 23, 2017

I have been enjoying the World Baseball Classic coverage on the MLB Network.  The US made the finals for the first time.  They defeated Puerto Rico 8-0 in the final. 

Giants players like Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford have done well.  Mark Melancon pitched once.  Ex-Giants like Sergio Romo and Nori Aoki have done well. 

Nickname #20 -- November 15, 2012

Lewis "Chesty" Puller was the most-decorated member of the United States Marine Corps, with five Navy Crosses and many other awards.  He rose from Private to Lieutenant General during his long distinguished career.  He missed combat during World War One, but spent much of the inter-war period fighting in the Caribbean and Central America.  During World War II, he led Marines on Guadalcanal and other islands in the Pacific.  When the Korean War broke out, he was at Inchon. 

He earned his nickname because of his barrel chest and his aggressive posture.  Marines in boot camp end their day with a shout of "Good night Chesty Puller, wherever you are!"

A famous quote which General Puller may have said at the Chosin Reservoir:  "We've been looking for the enemy for some time now. We've finally found him. We're surrounded. That simplifies things."

Comic Book #16 -- September 21, 2012

Blackhawk was one of my favorite comic book characters, although I first encountered him and his team, the Blackhawks, when DC tried to turn them into costumed superheroes, about 1968.  I found some older issues and even older stories reprinted in books. Blackhawk, an American or a Pole (it varied over the years), led a paramilitary team of ace aviators. Their airplanes are Grumman XF5F Skyrockets, a very cool-looking Navy fighter that never reached production.  They started out fighting the Axis in Quality's Military Comics.  The Blackhawks also appeared in their own title.  After the war, Military became Modern Comics.  Their enemies became Communists.  DC took over the Quality line. The series went downhill until it reached its Nadir in the New Blackhawk Era and the superhero experiment.   It died soon after, but it has returned now and then.

Buster Posey won the 2012 Willie Mac Award by vote of his teammates.  Well deserved.  

Alley #32 -- July 10, 2012

Looking down Stevenson Street from Third.  Dave's Bar is hidden by the truck on the right.  Beyond it is the back of the Monadnock Building.  The Palace Hotel is in the background, across Annie Street.  The Hearst Garage is on the right. I took the photo on 19-June-2012.

The National League won the All Star Game in Kansas City 8-0.  Matt Cain started and pitched two scoreless innings.  Melky Cabrera got a single in the first and scored a run.  Pablo Sandoval hit a bases-loaded triple in the first and scored.  Buster Posey caught Cain, walked in the first, and scored.  In the fourth, Cabrera hit a two-run home run.  Cabrera was chosen as MVP.  Good game. 

Giants on the All Star Team -- July 1, 2012

Three Giants were voted to start on the All Star team, Pablo Sandoval, Buster Posey and Melky Cabrera.  Matt Cain was selected as a pitcher.

I forgot to mention yesterday that we had  lunch at the Metreon, at La Boulange, which has a line out the door every workday at lunch.  We both had grilled cheese.  Very good.  After, we watched Circus Bella in Yerba Buena Gardens. 

Comic Book #5 -- May 26, 2011

Detective Comics Number 1 from March, 1937 is not as famous as Number 27, where The Batman made his debut. Number featured a variety of stories, including the debut of Slam Bradley, a detective feature by Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster, who went on to create Superman. Despite its racist roots, the image on the cover is striking. Detective is still published by the company which is now known as DC (for Detective Comics).

The Giants lost to the Marlins last night in extra innings, and they lost catcher Buster Posey, who was hurt trying to tag out the base runner who scored the winning run. Buster may be gone for the season.

Slapstick #3 -- November 15, 2010

Roscoe Arbuckle, who did not like to be called "Fatty," was a skilled comedian who started his movie career with Selig and Universal before he came to Keystone in 1913. While there he made many movies with Mabel Normand. They were a good team. He also helped Charlie Chaplin learn the ropes of working in movies. Like many of Mack Sennett's stars, Arbuckle left to get a raise. He made a series of short films that gave Buster Keaton his start in movies. Arbuckle moved up to feature films before getting tarred in a scandal in San Francisco. Even though he was found not guilty, his career was ruined. He returned to directing and eventually made a series of short sound films before he died in 1933.

Let's Go Buster -- October 20, 2010

Yesterday I had a half day off and I went over to Bay and Taylor to take some photos. I found car 28 with its windows painted with various exhortations. This one exhorts Giants rookie catcher Buster Posey.

Today the Giants and the Phillies traded the lead several times, but the Giants broke the tie in the ninth and won 6-5. Buster Posey had a remarkable game.
