BART Closed -- September 5, 2015
There are signs and labels all over the BART stations advising riders that BART will be down again over Labor Day weekend, as it was on August 1-2. They are replacing and repairing much of the 40 year old trackage. I took this photo at Colma Station.

Happy Labor Day #4 -- September 5, 2011
Harry Lundeberg, born in Norway, was a sailor and a leader of the Sailors' Union of the Pacific and the Seafarers International Union. He led the unions through difficult times in the 1930s, when maritime labor issues often led to violence against the working people. The monument stands in front of the SUP headquarters on Rincon Hill. The plaque reads "He was indeed a man who crowded into a short life no glittering promise, but unselfish service and general achievement for the course he called his own."

I remember in the early 1980s reading about an independent (non-Communist) labor union in Poland called Solidarity. It was influenced by Catholic social teachings. I figured they were doomed, but they persisted through persecution and martial law. They followed the One Big Union idea of the IWW. Eventually, they won. This is good to remember on Labor Day. Andrew Furuseth, born in Norway, was an early member of the union that became the Sailors' Union of the Pacific. He was head of the union from 1891 to 1935, and during that time he pushed for laws to improve conditions for sailors, including the banning of corporal punishment. The monument was erected on the Embarcadero in 1941, but was moved to the front of the SUP headquarters on Rincon Hill to make way for the Embarcadero Freeway. On the front of the monument is a famous quote from Furuseth: "You can put me in jail. But you cannot give me narrower quarters than as a seaman I have always had. You cannot give me coarser food than I have always eaten. You cannot make me lonelier than I have always been."

Happy Labor Day - September 1, 2008
We went to the Eighth annual Labor Day Railfair at Ardenwood Farm. The weather was good -- not as hot as last year (http://cablecarguy.blogspot.com/2007/09/happy-labor-day-september-3-2007.html). The guest locomotive this year was Sandstone Crag Loop Line #4, Deanna, an 0-4-2T built by Baldwin in 1891 for the Kaiwiki Sugar Co. in Ookala, HI. It is now privately owned in Coto de Caza, CA.
There were no horse-drawn train rides this year. Here is the note from the program, saying that they "will not be offered this year due to the loss of Tucker, one of our two wonderful Belgian draft horses. Jiggs, his partner, is in mourning and not up to giving rides this Railfair, but will be in attendance and receiving visitors."
There were nice model train layouts and the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association had a collection of internal combustion engines running by the barn. This year they did not have the locomotive run around the train.

Happy Labor Day - September 3, 2007

We went to the Seventh Annual Washington Township Railroad Fair at Ardenwood Historic Farm Regional Park in Fremont. Antelope and Western 1, an 1889 Porter 0-4-0, operated, along with a horse-drawn railcar and a garden train layout.
I'll post more on my Park Trains page at the end of the month. I took this video of A&W 1 pulling into Ardenwood Station. I have posted three other videos on YouTube.
