Juneteenth, 2022 -- June 19, 2022

Happy Juneteenth, everyone. After Vicksburg fell in 1863, Texas was mostly cut off from the rest of the Confederacy. Slaves in Texas did not learn about President Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation until 19-June-1865, when Union General Gordon Granger presented it to them.  I don't think I learned about Juneteenth until I was in college. On June 17, 2021 President Joe Biden signed a law making Juneteenth a national holiday.
