Red Devils Return to Pacifica #16 -- June 29, 2022

Pacifica is one of the two cities on the San Francisco peninsula that allow the sale of fireworks. The booths arrived last week. This is the stand at the Park Mall shopping center. I took the photo on 28-June-2021.

Many Pacificans agree that selling fireworks is a bad idea: We have steep, brush-covered hillsides that pose a fire danger. People use the "safe and sane" fireworks to mask the unsafe and insane variety. Not to mention my cat hates the Fourth of July.

Unfortunately, our charities claim that fireworks are the only thing they can sell that will generate enough money. That can't be true. What about drugs? Weapons? They're not thinking outside of the box.

Coulter -- The Broad-Beam Bark Wilna, A Record-Breaker -- June 28, 2022

San Francisco Call, 07-March-1895

William A Coulter did many maritime drawings for the San Francisco Call

BROAD OF BEAM
IS THE WILNA
The Sturdy Record - Breaking
Bark That "Fools" Her
Owners.

SHE DOESN'T DRAG HER WAKE

On Her Maiden Trip, Young and
Inexperienced, She Was
Fast.

Favored by breeze and seas the broad beamed bark Wilna goes in and out of port as regular as the tides.

"She is not sharp at the bow, like some of the newer clippers," said William E. Mighell, her owner, "but she is sharp on the quarterdeck and the seaweed never grows under her forefoot."

In this nautical adaptation of the old saying about "grass" growing under some body's "feet" Captain Slater, her commander, receives a merited compliment, for the bark under his seamanship fractures her own record every voyage. The last round trip between this port and Nanaimo occupied the sturdy vessel twenty-two days, with the mainsail and royals closely folded along the yards. The trip before was made in twenty-four days. The custom among the Pacific ship-owners of giving the officers of record-breakers silk hats, suits of clothes, watches, etc., keeps Captain John Slater in a new suit of rigging and the envy of every steamer skipper on the coast.

The Wilna was built at Freeport, Me., in 1880 by Brigg & Gushing and was the last wooden vessel that ever dipped into the sea from that noted ship-building place. She is 200:4 feet long, 42:1 feet in width and 24 feet deep and registers 140 ft tons net. Her cost was $105,000, and she has been an inexhaustible mine to her owners.

With beam a little less than one-fourth her length she was not built for speed, but she fooled 'em, and on her maiden voyage, young and inexperienced in the variable moods of the sea, she walked into Shanghai just 110 days after she left New York. Between Tesuga Straits, on the coast of Japan, and Cape Flattery she used only eighteen days.

She has a remarkably clean run to her hull, and the peculiar lines of her bottom are such that she leaves the water smooth. In the free and easy vernacular of her calling she "doesn't drag her wake." Captain Slater has made a slight change in two of the sails -- in splitting the spanker, making it easier to handle, and increasing the size of the flying jib.

Dallas Express, 03-June-1922

The Dallas Black Giants played from about 1908 to 1949 as a number of professional and semi-pro teams in various Texas-based African-American leagues. Ernie Banks played for the semi-pro version of the club.

Bierstadt -- A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie -- June 24, 2022

Brooklyn Museum

Albert Bierstadt painted "A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie" during an expedition in 1863. He named Mount Rosalie after a friend's wife. The mountain is now called Mount Evans, honoring the second governor of Colorado, John Evans. Evans is remembered as an instigator of the Sand Creek Massacre. The painting is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues. Even though I knew that the Russian government is thoroughly corrupt, I am still shocked at how badly their military has performed. Many of the Russian generals who have not been killed have been fired.

George Eastman's Kodak cameras allowed many people to take up photography. The Autographic Kodak had a little hatch that allowed the photographer to write the date and time on each exposure.

KPO -- Broadcasting Features for Monday! -- June 21, 2022

San Francisco Examiner, 11-June-1922

The original KPO studios were in the Hale Brothers department store at Fifth and Market. Hale Brothers owned the station. In 1929, the station moved to the Hale Brothers annex, seen behind the corner store. In 1927, the station became an early affiliate of the NBC Red Network. NBC acquired KPO in the 1930s and changed the call letters to KNBC. Later, they wanted to use the call sign for a Los Angeles station and changed the San Francisco station to KNBR.

This ad for Hale's Brothers mentions the radio station but not the call letters. The Shriners (Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine) were having their annual convention (Imperial Council Session). Imperial Potentate Cutts was the outgoing head of the organization.

Fanchon and Marco (Wolff) had various companies touring in vaudeville and ran a dance school in Los Angeles. I have never heard the song "Islam Greets You."

Happy Father's Day, 2022 -- June 19, 2022

Happy Fathers' Day to all my fellow fathers. I miss my dad. And I miss my father-in-law. I haven't had anyone for whom to buy a card for a long time. I am lucky to have a great daughter and son-in-law.

Juneteenth, 2022 -- June 19, 2022

www.holidayscalendar.com

Happy Juneteenth, everyone. After Vicksburg fell in 1863, Texas was mostly cut off from the rest of the Confederacy. Slaves in Texas did not learn about President Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation until 19-June-1865, when Union General Gordon Granger presented it to them.  I don't think I learned about Juneteenth until I was in college. On June 17, 2021 President Joe Biden signed a law making Juneteenth a national holiday.

Colored Man Has Hair-Raising Time in Eluding a Mob -- June 18, 2022

Chicago Broad Ax, 03-June-1922

The Broad Ax was an African-American owned newspaper. I was surprised to learn that there was such a thing in Salt Lake City in 1897. In 1899, owner Julius F Taylor moved the newspaper to Chicago. The appeal to the Governor did not work, so Jim Denson was legally hanged on 17-June-1922.

COLORED MAN HAS HAIR-
RAISING TIME IN ELUD-
ING A MOB

Macon. Ga. -- Jim Denson, colored youth, whose appeal from a death sentence was carried without avail to the Supreme Court of the United States, and who early this week narrowly escaped lynching at the hands of a mob, is safe at the present time in Bibb county's "mob proof" jail.

"I'se sho' mighty proud to be here," was Jim's smiling comment, even though the sentence to be hanged June 16 for an alleged attack on an aged white woman three years ago still stares him in the face.

Jim however had some reason to smile beyond his escape from the mob, because numerous white-people in this and Wilkinson county, believing his escape was an act of Providence, were considering an appeal to Governor Hardwick for commutation to life imprisonment.

Story of His Escape

The colored man, after having safely settled himself in the jail here, told the story of his escape, which, in addition to the details of the mob s action in breaking into the jail, at Irwinton early Tuesday, ran as follows:

"They tied a rope around my neck. Then they dragged me into the automobile. I asked them to let me pray and they replied that they hadn't time.

"I heard them say they would shoot me just out of town. The knot on the rope around my neck was choking me. I reached up my hand in the dark and felt the slip-knot. I untied it. The automobile was going thirty miles an hour, and I says to myself, Jim jump or be kilt' I jumped feet first, flam-flooy, and I hit the ground on my feet and then on my head and then I must have flopped over four times and rolled into the ditch.

"When I got out of the ditch several shots were fired at me. I crawled, but they kept on firing. I got up again and ran. I was barefooted, my clothes were torn off me, and the gravel cut my feet."

Hounds Are Too Numerous

The colored man said he obtained bread from another colored man at sunup and then crawled into a swamp, where he spent the day and night Growing hungry, he said he crawled out to eat some wild plums and then he heard bloodhounds on his trail.

"Pretty soon a white hound came upon me," the colored man continued. "I kept jumpin' from one side of the creek to the other. I couldn't shake him off. He got right up to my heels so I stopped, snapped my fingers at him. and, lawdy -- he curled his tail and walked right -up to me. I took off my belt and tied him to me."

The colored man had the hound tied to him, was playing with a second hound and was fighting off a third when the sheriff's posse reached him.

Warriors Win the NBA Championship -- June 17, 2022

San Francisco Call, 05-February-1911

The Golden State Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics 4-2 in the NBA championship series. This is their fourth title in eight years. I don't usually mention basketball here, but I watched each game of the championship.

Pronounced Klee-Ko -- June 17, 2022

New York Herald, 28-June-1922

At one time the Clicquot Club Company was one of the major soft-drink producers. It went out of business in 1980. The company was best known for its ginger ale, but it also made sarsaparilla, birch beer and root beer. I have never had birch beer. I like sarsaparilla, but I haven't had it for years.

In the late 1920s, Cliquot Club sponsored a popular radio show, The Clicquot Club Eskimos. The Eskimos, named after the brand's mascot, were a band led by banjoist Harry Reser.

Flag Day 2022 -- June 14, 2022

Happy Flag Day, everyone. The July, 1959 issue was the first one with an image on the cover.

When I was young, one of my favorite spots in the house was a big set of shelves in the basement that had every issue of National Geographic, in order by date, going back to the mid-1950s. The July, 1959 issue was the first one with an image on the cover.

After my dad died, my uncle decided that he needed to clean up my mother's basement. He threw away all of the Geographics. I still get upset about that.

Carson City Appeal, 06-June-1922

The Virginia and Truckee connected Reno with Carson City and Virginia City in Nevada. A branch ran from Carson City south to Minden. The railroad was very profitable while the Comstock Lode was producing silver and gold. The mines were still producing in 1922.

Ferry Garden City RIP -- June 8, 2022

Oakland Tribune, 07-June-1922

Ferry Garden City was built in 1879 for the narrow gauge South Pacific Coast Railroad. After Southern Pacific consumed the South Pacific Coast, Garden City continued to run regularly between San Francisco and the Alameda Mole until 1922. She returned from retirement several times before finally being written off in 1929. Bits and pieces of Garden City are visible at times in the Carquinez Strait.

I Voted/End of School -- June 7, 2022

I like the design of this sticker.

Today was the last day of the school year at Good Shepherd School in Pacifica. I wanted to go to the moving up ceremony, but I had to go to Kaiser for two tests. I got invited to the faculty lunch at the Mezza Luna in Princeton. People were happy and the food was good. I had chicken saltimbocca. I dropped off my ballot on the way home and then took a nap.
