Today is 150th anniversary of the conquest of Rome and final unification of Italy on 20-September-1870. The army of the Kingdom of Italy, led by General Raffaele Cadorna, breached the Aurelian Walls. The Bersaglieri were the first to enter the city. Outnumbered Papal Zouaves put up a fight, but were overwhelmed. Pope Pius IX declared himself "The Prisoner of the Vatican." The next year, Rome became the capital of Italy.
Many towns and cities in Italy have a Via XX Settembre.
I borrowed the Google Doodle above from the 150th anniversary of the unification of the rest of Italy, on 17-March-1861.
Viva L'Italia Unita!
