San Francisco Call, 29-June-1895 |
The drawing is from the 03-June-1895 San Francisco Call. William A Coulter did many maritime drawings for the newspaper.
Several shipbuilders promoted whalebacks as the next big thing in the 1880s and 1890s. The hull curved like the back of a whale. The type did not catch on for various reasons. Many served on the Great Lakes, but only one, the Meteor, survives. SS City of Everett was launched in 1894. She foundered in the Gulf of Mexico in 1923. All hands were lost.
Note that the caption and the new item below disagree about the name of the barge and the number of sacks of barley. I think the caption is correct about the name, Atlas, and the story is correct about the number of sacks, 15,000.
Yesterday the steamer Merren towed the big barge Attus down from Stockton with 15,000 sacks of barley, which is to be loaded in the whaleback City of Everett for New York by way of Panama.
